New engine in the land rover (last weeks project)
As a few of you know I have land rover 90 as my winter car.
We fitted a V8 to it a few years back (was a great move at the time) but due to the way fuel prices have gone i've had to go and do something that i never thought would happen. I've had to take the V8 out and fit a 2.5 tdi
Last sunday i picked up the new engine (out of a 94 disco)
Sunday afternoon i set to at pulling the V8 out before i changed my mind.
Monday night i set to putting the tdi in
After a few issues by thursday the engine was fitted ( had to change the bell housing to a tdi one, have a spigot bearing made due to different layshafts between the V8 and tdi, and fabricate some new engine feet for the chassis)
Eventually (with alot of help from my dad) I managed to get all the bits fitted and got it back up and running on friday
It's weird to drive now and sounds like something is missing but needs must i suppose.
Just need to find a new toy to put the V8 in now

It usually takes people months to do this sort of thing!
Well done!
Is the off road day the last Sunday in the month?

Good effort - are you expecting a serious improvement in MPG?

I hope it gets better economy than my land rover! The V8 on LPG was cheaper to run than this 300 TDI

It still has to cart that weight about and the gearing is the same, a slower engine means you'll probably drive it harder using more fuel etc.
Slightly off topic but has anyone seen the new range rover? The marketing is saying a range rover for £27k etc, I've just been on the website to "design your car" and it came to £40k, could get a RR sport for that lol
Re: New engine in the land rover (last weeks project)
Yeh but if you spec the range rover sport you want, it'll cost you 60k!
The evoque just seems like an expensive way of buying a freelander to me.
The 200/300TDI land rovers are supposed to get 30+ mpg
The V8's get around 12-14MPG (equivalent of about 22-25mpg when on LPG due to the cost difference)
Mine is getting about 22mpg at the moment, and is seriously underpowered so I've got to do some digging to see what the problem is.
Went out in peet's the other day, and he thought his was slow. Definitely didn't feel slow compared to mine!

Hopefully it should do about 27mpg running round and 30 ish on a run, but compared to the V8 doing 15 ish running round and 22 on a run (keeping it to 50) its a bit better
Just need to change my high ratio transfer box for a standard one and it'll be a bit better on take off.
Sure we'll get yours sorted eventually Phil (hopefully before the snow comes)
least its doin better than this day
