race fuel v road fuel

Post by jpick on Sat Jul 30, 2011 10:38 pm

anybody just watched the ferrari test on f1 qualifying?
senor alonso just had a play around with both fuels and apart from a tad less response powering out of a corner, he thinks it no different and with the telemetry up on both, they reckon a good re-map would negate any difference.
quite surprised at that myself but not a big fuel boffin Very Happy
any comments people ???

No I didn't see it.

Road fuels are pretty good quality nowadays. The main difference is the octane level.
The higher the octane, the better resistance to detonation, so you can advance the timing, or on a forced induction engine, up the boost. Both give you more power. I would have thought that f1 engines run about 110 octane race fuel which, with the right mapping, should give a good bit more poke than 99 octane super unleaded.

ah, is that why my car feels smoother running super unleaded than the normal? Very Happy

They never even remapped it which was the best bit, very impressive. I am sure it was Shell V-max thou

Alonso was even impressed (the best F1 driver on the grid at the moment IMHO)

Awesome race. Great to see Button win, I dislike Hamilton myself but he has been better recently with his attitude.

Just watched the highlights! Just as I was starting to think I was wrong about hating Hamilton, he goes and almost takes Di Resta off the track spinning it back around! I know that's the usual way to turn back around but he could have done it the other way! I was starting to like him after watching him race to the line at Silverstone but he's just unimpressed me again!
